These are the sort of drives you plan journeys around -- from Australia's Nice Ocean Street to California's Freeway 1.

1. Oregon Coast Highway one zero one

Some of the famous landmarks on the Oregon coast is Haystack Rock, endlessly generally known as Goonies Rock, due to its appearance at the tip of the 1981 kidventure flick The Goonies. The sea stack rises 235 toes above sea stage, and is a visible beacon alongside Oregon's Highway 101 calling you to Cannon Seashore.

Wind your means two hours' south of Cannon Seaside (stopping on the Tillamook cheese factory for picnic fixings along the way) to Cape Kiwanda at Pacific Metropolis, one of the points on the Three Capes Scenic Route. (Cape Meres can also be notable for its cute-but-squat lighthouse and many-limbed Octopus Tree.)

2. California's Highway 1

- Carmel-by-the-Sea for the 17-Mile Drive and tasty Mediterranean food at Dametra Cafe.
- Cambria, for Hearst Castle and the zebras (more on that in a second).
- San Luis Obispo, "America's happiest metropolis," for smoked salmon and a glass of wine at Koberl at Blue.
- Santa Barbara, to stroll around its charming downtown.
- Malibu, to really feel like a true California seashore bum.

Considered one of our favourite turnoffs in Big Sur is Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Park your car and stroll lower than half a mile to McWay Falls, an 80-foot waterfall that gushes all 12 months lengthy.

After Big Sur comes Freeway 1's notorious hairpin curves and blind corners, which you'll white-knuckle at 20 mph...till one thing in you caves, your grip on the wheel loosens, and also you begin to have fun, taking every turn with a whoop.

3. Road to Hana, Maui, Hawaii

The Highway to Hana -- or the Hana Freeway, connecting Kahului to Hana in east Maui -- is greater than 50 miles of turquoise surf, bamboo forests, red ochre hills, waterfalls, and lush rainforest alongside Maui's North Shore.

Not included in the brochure: The road is daunting and takes three hours to journey, at the very least. From the sky, it appears to be like like Hana Highway was carved into Maui by a giant--working his finger alongside the island's curves like it is icing on a cake.

4. Causeway Coastal Route, Northern Ireland

Northern Eire's Causeway Coastal Route hasn't gotten the type of press that, say, Freeway 1 in California has obtained -- partially as a result of Belfast and past have been off limits to vacationers for so lengthy. But it's gorgeous: To the left of the winding, slender freeway are excessive plateaus marked by hedges in orderly rows, and sloping hills dotted with stone cottages and sheep in various shades of white, grey, and tan. Locations roll by referred to as Ballygally and Ballycastle and Larrybane, all sounding like teasing nicknames for stomachaches and herbs for overcoming ordinariness.

However with the arrival of the sport of Thrones manufacturing group in tiny harbor towns like Ballintoy, pictured right here, the Causeway Coastal Route now caters to Obtained fans with its own Sport of Thrones road journey.

Fun truth: Ballintoy stands in because the harbor of the Iron Islands.

5. Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia

Just west of Melbourne is a dramatic coastline with an uncharacteristically boastful title for Australia. The one hundred fifty-mile Nice Ocean Highway was built as a memorial to the fallen soldiers of World Struggle I, but now serves as a memorable one- to two-day journey (eh, simply make it a long weekend). It starts within the surf city of Torquay and winds on past Lorne to Port Campbell, dwelling of the 12 Apostles.

Technically, there were solely 9, then eight, apostles--limestone stacks carved from the cliffs over the millenia by erosion. Nearby, the Three Sisters have dwindled to 2, with one collapsing in 2009. The perfect time to go to is now.
